Rise in over 50s using tablet devices

More than half of UK households now own a tablet device, with a rise in the number of those being used by over 50s.

The number of adults over the age of 55 owning a tablet device has risen by 36 per cent in the past four years.

This is a very interesting statistic, as it is often considered that this age group is either not particularly interested in modern technology, or is apprehensive about using it. However, it would appear that this assumption has been proved to be incorrect by recently released Ofcom figures.

As a whole, more than half of UK households now own a tablet, which includes products such as Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Fire, Google’s Nexus, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. In 2011, just two per cent of households owned a tablet, but this has now risen to 54 per cent, with the device proving to be most popular with those aged 16 to 34.

Over 55s are one of the fastest growing demographics

In an article by the Guardian, Stefano Hatfield, chief executive of online community High50 said, “The 50+ age group invented most of the cool stuff we use today. How old is Bill Gates, Tim Berners-Lee and Tim Cook? How old would Steve Jobs have been? Not only are we using them for reading digital newspapers and books, but also to binge-watch TV series, graze YouTube, stay in touch with family and friends over Skype and stay connected on Facebook.”

The Ofcom statistics also break down how people use tablets, with more than a third of people catching up on favourite programs using services such as BBC’s iPlayer and the ITV player. Nearly half of tablet users also read the news using apps, which can be compared to the 37 per cent who use a web browser to read the daily headlines.

It would appear that tablets are also popular with over 50s, as it allows them to remain in contact with relatives, such as grandchildren by using video chat.
