Property upkeep costs worrying the elderly

A survey has revealed that a fifth of the elderly are worried about the costs of home maintenance, especially as their health deteriorates.

More than a fifth of home owners over the age of 60 were concerned about maintaining their property in later life due to finances. A further third of the respondents were also worried that whilst they could get around their home thanks to getting a new stairlift, they may not be able to carry out tasks such as mowing the lawn due to the deterioration of their physical abilities as they age.

This is particularly worrying, as it is very important that the upkeep of a home is maintained for a variety of different reasons. Some insurance companies can reject claims if a home is poorly maintained, as it may be deemed that the property owners had not taken reasonable steps to avoid damage. For example, general wear and tear is not covered by home insurance policies, meaning that the problem would not be covered if it results in a major issue.

Seeking assistance to upkeep your home

In an article by BT, it is suggested that the best way to keep on top of maintenance is by carrying out regular inspections, checking both the interior and exterior of the home. It is important to have any problems sorted as soon as possible to ensure that you are not in danger and your home is covered in the event that you should need to claim on your insurance.

Those worried about home maintenance should find out about their local Home Improvement Agency, who can provide a range of services for the elderly and disabled, including helping you to find a suitable handyperson. However, it is worth nothing that the services provided by these agencies can differ by location, so it is advised that you chat with your local agency to find out what is available to you.
