Celebrate Valentine’s Day with that special senior in your life

There will soon be a flood of red and pink hearts, delicious chocolate, cards, flowers, and so so much love in the air. Valentine’s Day can be a special time for many, but for the elderly, the day specially set aside for loved ones can be a sad, lonely one.

Maybe because of the loss of a spouse, living in a care home, or being isolated at home alone, holidays and times for celebrations can leave many elderly people feeling down or depressed. If a lack of mobility has not been enhanced by assistive technology like stairlifts and scooters, some seniors may feel cut off from the rest of the world.

This year, why not celebrate Valentine’s Day with any of these easy, inexpensive and fun ways to show your elderly friends and relatives that you love and cherish them.

Here are some ideas to make the day a bit more special:

Family Game Time

Inviting the special people in your life to spend some time at your home is a great way to make them feel special. With the help of the grandkids, create a unique Valentines-themed game of Bingo. With homemade cards, players can use cut-out hearts to cover the called numbers. Bingo cards can be personalised for each player, and can become a wonderful memento of the occasion. Board games after a Valentine’s Day Tea Party can be a lovely way to spend some time together.

Another great idea is to create a gift auction. Using inexpensive gifts and elaborate themed wrapping, the family can bid on gifts using play money. For more ideas on enjoying your time this Valentine’s Day, pay a visit to Elderly Activities.

Celebrate in town

To get out to enjoy the day together, a stroll down the High Street or the nearest shopping centre is a great idea. Some nice shopping is great, but the fresh air and a bit of exercise can be a great stimulant as well. Look for destinations that will spark the interest of your elderly loved ones. Remember, if there are mobility issues, plan your day out ahead of time and secure the necessary equipment. Be sure to take the right amount of rest breaks as well.

Pay a special visit

Sometimes, just paying a visit is the best way to show someone you care about them. With the help of the kids, deliver some handmade Valentine’s Day cards to your loved one’s home. A heartfelt surprise will bring an immediate smile to the face of your elderly family member. With some food in tow, enjoy some time chatting or watching television. A nice way to show you love someone may be to offer to do some housework– especially if they have trouble completing certain tasks.

The NHS, in the interest of better healthcare for all, offers a handy guide to spending quality time with the elderly to help curb loneliness.

Valentine’s Day food ideas

For any of these great experiences, make sure to come prepared with themed treats and goodies. Heart-shaped biscuits, cookies or cake are excellent ways to celebrate. A West Country cream tea with its white clotted cream and vibrant strawberry jam is perfect. Add a bit of continental flair by preparing some French crepes stuffed with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.

If planning a meal, include lots of red fruits and vegetables to make it a bit more festive. Just be aware of any necessary dietary restrictions. The Food Network UK has categorised its elderly friendly recipes.
